La primera semana de LEC nos deja con ganas de más, repasa todo lo sucedido

La League of Legends European Championship (LEC) ha vuelto. Por fin. Y Europa está más emocionada que nunca.

Desde el 10 de enero las Ligas Europeas Regionales (ERL) han estado abriendo la competición con partidos emocionantes. Han estado preparando a miles de espectadores para este pasado fin de semana, donde todo el mundo ha sido capaz de ver la máxima competición Europea de LoL.

Durante la primera ‘super semana’ del Spring Split de 2022 todos los equipos han jugado desde sus espacios de entrenamiento debido a la pandemia contra la que seguimos luchando. A pesar de haber tenido momentos divertidos frente a las webcams, se espera que la situación sanitaria mejore pronto y los jugadores vuelvan al estudio, tal y como se pudo ver en ambos splits el año pasado. Teniendo esto en cuenta, la audiencia ha sido más leal que nunca este fin de semana con una media de 318.914 espectadores, que ya supera a la del split de primavera de 2021 según eSportsCharts. La partida más vista ha sido entre G2 Esports y Excel con un pico de 515.373 espectadores. 

Para ir entrando en detalle, es necesario decir que han sido tres intensos días donde hemos podido ver terribles jugadas, elecciones de campeones curiosas y, por supuesto, las nuevas almas de dragón en acción como la Chemtech the apareció por primera vez el sábado en el partido de Mad Lions contra Sk Gaming. Este juego también fue el más largo de toda la ‘super semana’ que casi llegó a la hora de duración. Tal y como ha puntualizado Express LOL en Twitter fue la partida más larga de la LEC desde la temporada 8 en el split de primavera, siendo éste un partido entre G2 vs Schalke 04, equipo que este año ya no se encuentra en la competición.

Picks y bans

De cara a la champion pool esta temporada hemos estado viendo muchos campeones de letalidad debido a los cambios en las runas, principalmente la de ‘compás letal’. Teniendo esto en consideración, durante el fin de semana las siete elecciones prioritarias han sido personajes que cumplen con ese propósito y, además, tienen potencial de explosión, alto daño y potencial de jugadas, son de top hacia bot: Renekton, Viego, Le Blanc, Jinx, Jhin and Rakan. Es importante recordar en los picks del carril inferior que Jhin queda fácilmente anulado por campeones tanques y que puede ser algo inútil a pesar de que puede hacer el mismo o incluso más daño que Jinx a comienzo de partida. Respecto a Rakan, es justo decir que este soporte es la respuesta a muchas de las elecciones mencionadas, especialmente por su movilidad que, ahora, comprando el Canto de Guerra de Shurelya puede correr aún mejor.

Pero cuando hay elecciones prioritarias, también hay personajes baneados por razones similares. En este caso hay una selección de cinco campeones: Renekton, Diana, Lee Sin, Twisted Fate, Caitlyn y Thresh. Con los campeones de la jungla, especialmente, la movilidad y poder de gankeos es algo que los equipos han querido evitar. En la nueva temporada los gankeos en niveles bajos están apareciendo de nuevo sobre la mesa y, por eso, los equipos han querido alejarse de campeones que pueden obtener esta ventaja en partida.

Sorpresas del fin de semana

No podemos ir a los momentos destacados del fin de semana sin analizar brevemente los picks sorpresa que los equipos han conseguido, o no, ejecutar:

• Corki toplane: G2 BrokenBlade jugó con este campeón en su primer partido de la temporada contra Excel. Como señalaron los casters, no habíamos visto jugar a Corki en la parte superior desde la 9ª temporada. Después de este partido, los equipos se han atrevido a utilizar más este campeón en otros carriles.
• Akshan: Aunque es un campeón nuevo en el juego y se supone que está "roto", sólo lo hemos visto dos veces este fin de semana. Igualmente, hemos visto a Akshan como un baneo prioritario para algunos equipos. La primera vez que lo hemos visto ha sido en manos de Vitality Perkz en el carril central, donde vimos jugadas difíciles de digerir. Por suerte Brokenblade, el toplaner de G2, redimió la reputación del campeón y tuvo una buena actuación en el último día contra Mad Lions, aunque el resultado final no fuera el esperado.
• Seraphine ADC: G2 Flakked eligió a este campeón el segundo día de su debut en LEC. Su apoyo, G2 Targamas, escogió a Pyke, su campeón por excelencia, en la partida contra Astralis del día 2. Algo picante y bien ejecutado por esta nueva botlane que se llevó la victoria.
• Akali: El nuevo midlaner de Astralis, Dajor, eligió a Akali, un campeón que no es meta en el parche actual para jugar contra Rogue en el tercer día del fin de semana. Lo que empezó bien no terminó siendo la mejor elección, pero al menos se atrevió a elegir el personaje.
• Wukong: Si mencionamos a este campeón automáticamente pensamos en Armut, el toplaner de Mad Lions, pero no sería una elección que nos sorprendiese. En este caso fue un pick de Alphari de Vitality para su partida contra Excel en el día 3. Es la primera vez que vemos a este jugador utilizar a Wukong en su carrera competitiva.
• Kassadin: Otro día, otra sorpresa de G2. A caPs, su midlaner, le gusta sorprender de vez en cuando con una elección potente como la de este campeón. Como era de esperar Kassadin fue muy fuerte en el juego medio y tardío y ganó poder con el Yuumi sobre él. No ganaron, pero fue una buena actuación.

Ahora que hemos analizado los picks y bans y repasamos los picks sorpresa hay algunos puntos destacados del fin de semana que merecen ser mencionados. De SK Gaming tenemos una sorprendente actuación de Alistar en Treatz en la partida contra Mad Lions. Fue de frente a todas las peleas desde el inicio de la partida y nos dejó muchas buenas jugadas. Algo que no vimos el día anterior con el mismo pick. El jugador que nos sorprendió en la jungla el pasado split vuelve a la botlane con más fuerza que nunca. 

Otro de los momentos que ha vivido en la mente de los espectadores este fin de semana es el dive de tres jugadores contra Wunder en el partido Fnatic vs Vitality del fin de semana. El toplaner demostró una vez más que es el mejor Gragas jugando consiguiendo una doble muerte de un dive liderado por su antiguo compañero Perkz.

Todo el mundo sabe que la nueva alma de la dragona Chemtech hace desaparecer los arbustos para dar la bienvenida a una jungla donde los campeones se camuflan. Como podemos ver en Misfits vs BDS en el día 3. Vetheo que tuvo que predecir dónde podía caer el enemigo. Sorprendentemente lo hizo y consiguió la muerte que sorprendió al público.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, hay que destacar la difícil semana para los súper equipos de LoL europeos como Vitality. Un equipo que prometía el mundo y que creó una buena narrativa en torno a los jugadores como titanes tenía tanta expectativa que se vino abajo durante el fin de semana. Aunque hayan sufrido 3 derrotas es importante tener en cuenta que esta es solo la primera semana de un nuevo split, con nuevos equipos, nueva temporada del juego y este sigue siendo un equipo que todo el mundo espera que lo haga mejor la próxima semana. 

También es de destacar que los únicos equipos que han llegado invictos al final de esta primera semana han sido Rogue y Fnatic. Dos equipos que también estrenan roster y que venían con altas expectativas.

Esto es todo por el primer super fin de semana de la LEC, ahora es el momento de seguir repasando los partidos y animar a los equipos. Todos pueden subir y todos pueden bajar, pero esto es competición de alto nivel, esto es Europa.

THE FIRST WEEK OF THE LEC LEAVES US WANTING MORE, REVIEW ALL THAT HAPPENED

League of Legends European Championship (LEC) is back. Finally. And Europe is more excited than ever.

Since January 10th European Regional Leagues (ERL) have been opening the competition with amazing games. They’ve been preparing thousands of spectators for this weekend, where everyone has been able to see the maximum European LoL competition.

During the first super week of the 2022 Spring Split all the the teams have played in their training facilities due to the pandemic we are still fighting against. Even if we’ve had some funny moments in front of the webcam, there’s hope on seeing the players back in studio like in both splits last year, if the sanitary conditions gets better. Keeping that in mind, the audience has been more loyal than ever this weekend with 318.914 average viewers which is already higher than the whole spring split from 2021 with 309.951 according to eSportsCharts. The leading match with the highest viewership has been G2 Esports vs Excel with a peak of 515.373 people watching.

To get into more details, is needed to say that they have been three intense days were we’ve been able to see some nasty plays, spicy picks, and, of course, the new dragon souls in action, like the Chemtech that showed for the first time on Saturday in the Mad Lions vs Sk Gaming game. This game was also the longest one of the whole super week that nearly went for an hour. As Express LOL said on Twitter it was the longest LEC game since season 8 on spring split, being that a G2 vs Schalke 04 game. Since this season Schalke 04 team does not longer belong to the competition.

Picks and bans

For champion pool this season we have been seeing a lot of lethality champions due to the changes in the runes, especially ‘lethal tempo’. Taking that in consideration, during the weekend the seven high priority picks that fulfill that purpose and, in addition, have burst potential, high damage and play potential are, starting from top to bot: Renekton, Xin Zhao, Viego, Le Blanc, Jinx, Jhin and Rakan. It’s important to remember on the botlane picks that Jhin gets easily counterpicked by tanks and could be useless even if he can do equal or even higher damage early game than a Jinx. For the Rakan is fair to say that this support is the answer to a lot of the previous picks especially for his mobility now that buying Shurelya's Battlesong gets to run around even better.

But when there are priority characters, there are also top bans for similar reasons. In this case there’s a selection of five champions: Renekton, Diana, Lee Sin, Twisted Fate, Caitlyn and Thresh. Especially with the jungle champions mobility and ganking power is something that has been a thing to avoid this weekend. In the new season the ganks at lower levels are coming back to the table, that’s why the teams escaped champions that can get that advantage in game.

Highlights of the weekend

We cannot skip to the general highlights of the super week without mentioning some spicy picks that the teams may or may not pulled off. 

• Corki toplane: G2 BrokenBlade played this champion on their first match of the season against Excel. As the casters pointed we haven’t seen cork being played topside since Season 9. After this match teams have been trying the champion even more on other lanes.
• Akshan: Even if its a new champion in the game and it’s supposed to be “broken”, we only saw it twice this weekend. Although we have seen Akshan as a priority ban for some teams. The first one was in Vitality Perkz’ hands on midland, where we saw plays difficult to digest. Luckily Brokenblade, G2s toplaner, redeemed the champion reputation and performed good on the last day against Mad Lions, even if the ending result wasn’t as expected.
• Seraphine ADC: G2 Flakked picked this champion the second day of his debut on LEC. His support, G2 Targamas, took Pyke, his signature champion, on the game vs Astralis on day 2. Something spicy and well executed by this new botlane that took the victory.
• Akali: Astralis’ new midlaner Dajor picked Akali, a champion that is not meta on the current patch to play against Rogue on the third day of the weekend. What started okay didn’t end up being the best choice, but at least he went bold and picked the character.
• Wukong: If we say this champion we automatically think of Armut, Mad Lions’ toplaner, but that wouldn’t be a spicy pick. In this case it was a choice from Vitality's Alphari for their game vs Excel on day 3. This is the first time we’ve seen this player take Wukong in his competitive career.
• Kassadin: Another day, another G2 surprise. caPs, their midlaner, likes to surprise every now on then with a powerful pick like this champion. As expected Kassadin was so strong mid to late game and gained power with the Yuumi on him. They didn’t win, but it was a nice performance.

Now that we analyzed the picks and bans and review the spicy picks there are some highlights of the weekend that are worth mentioning. From SK Gaming we have a surprising Alistar performance on Treatz on the game against Mad Lions. He went front to back every fight since the start of the game and left us with so many good plays. Something we didn’t saw the day before with the same pick. The player who surprised us in the jungle last split is coming down to the botlane with more strength than ever. 

Another moment that has been living rent free in the spectators minds this weekend is the three man dive against Wunder in the Fnatic vs Vitality match up of the weekend. The toplaner proved once again that he is the best Gragas playing getting a double kill from a dive leaded by his old teammate Perkz.

Everyone knows that with the new Chemtech soul makes bushes disappear to welcome a jungle where champions camouflage. As we can see on Misfits vs BDS on day 3. Vetheo that had to predict where the enemy could fall. Surprisingly he did and he got the kill that surprised the audience.

Last but not least, its needed to point out the difficult week for Europe’s LoL super teams like Vitality. A team that promised the world and created a good narrative around the players as titans had so much expectation that fell down during the weekend. Even if they have been through 3 loses it’s important to keep in mind that this is only week one of a new split, with new teams, new season of the game and this is still a team that everyone hopes is doing it better next week. 

It is also noteworthy that the only teams that have reached the end of this first week undefeated have been Rogue and Fnatic. Two teams that also premiered roster and that came with high expectations.

This is all for the first super weekend of the LEC, now its time to keep reviewing the games and cheer for the teams. Everyone can rise and everyone can fall, but this is high level competition, this is Europe.
